What is Lotgen, why does it exist and how does it work?

The lotgen site was created to produce "True" random numbers for lottery entries.

Normally, computer generated random numbers are Pseudo-random - they are actually extracted from a very long but pre-determined numeric sequence.
This sequence can be anything from tens of thousands to billions of numbers long, but it is still a sequence.

A lot of people believe that true random numbers have a better chance of winning than a fixed set of numbers or the sequenced pseudo-random values created by normal lottery number generators.
When I used my previous PC-based number generator, I seemed to get a lot more small wins that using the lottery site "lucky dip" number generator

This site / program uses numbers created by the person using it as part of the number creation and randomisation system: As you click through the pages, the location of each click and the time in millionths of a second are recorded.

These input values, which are completely unpredictable, are used in various ways to select and scramble the numbers produced. The user created values are used indirectly, so the user cannot bias the results by patterns or times of clicks.

FAQ:

The numbers produced do not seem very random - there are sequences or groups:
Truly random numbers often appear to have patterns or be non-random. This is why people are not very good at selecting random numbers, as they try to avoid groups, sequences or patterns.
As an example, if you throw a pair of dice, there is better than a one in four chance the two numbers will be adjacent - 10 from 36 possibilities.

The images take a long time to load:
The image files used are typically each 100 - 150 K Bytes in size. They should not take more than a second or two to load the first time any particular image is dislayed. Most browsers will then cache them on your machine, so they can be displayed newr instantly when seen again. At the time of writing this, there are 35 images used.

The images are chosen to have no obvious focus or area that stands out, to avoid people targetting any particular area. They are from the Texturex web site.
